Scalable Optimal Control Allocation: Linear and Quadratic Programming Methods Applied to Active Capacitor Balancing in Modular Multilevel Converters

The paper introduces a novel, scalable control allocation (CA) formulation for active capacitor balancing of the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC). is obtained by introducing converter arm model that also and accommodates an MMC with any number phases submodules (SM). CA algorithm involves fast real-time minimization error cost function formalized as linear programming (LP) quadratic (QP) problems. coding implemented in both cases using interior-point method. A hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test procedure used to demonstrate ability perform voltage balancing. influence QP vs LP on system behavior evaluated, tracking errors are found be more evenly distributed than LP.
